Reading

Our love for reading and reading rationale explains our reading intention at Leonard Stanley. We want children to love reading and hold reading as our golden thread, bringing together our school curriculum. Our guided reading programme allows children to read a wide variety of texts on topics that enrich the curriculum. For example, texts about adventure, scientists, religions, and cultures from around the world, famous authors, and texts about our local area.

Writing

Writing

At Leonard Stanley Primary School, we strive to help our children develop into articulate and imaginative communicators who are well-equipped with the basic skills they need to become life-long learners; writing is key in this. We aim for all of our pupils to be able to confidently communicate their knowledge, ideas and emotions through their writing.

We want pupils to have high-quality writing opportuities in a range of genres, engage in active and experiential learning and take pride in their outcomes. It is ambitious and empowers our children to become independent and resilient. We enrich their time in our school with memorable, unforgettable experiences and provide opportunities that are normally out of reach; this promotes a love of writing that reaches far beyond the classroom.

Writing Progression

This writing overview shows the genres covered in each year group.  It also includes the link to our Progression of Skills through Genres document showing the development of skills covered.  Teachers then use these skills to create toolkits for the children so they understand what they are learning and can be assessed accordingly. We also have our Writing Skills End Points document covering all skills learnt at Leonard Stanley Primary School.

Maths

Maths

We aim to develop motivated, creative and resilient mathematicians who can confidently apply what they learn. Most of all, we want children to enjoy maths and to get excited about the challenges the subject can bring. Maths is about learning new skills and practising these to become fluent so as to be able to apply them in real-life situations. It is important to us that children see the relevance of maths and why it is needed in life. We set our children’s learning in context by making links to real life and across the curriculum, giving their learning worth.

  • We teach the National Curriculum (2013) throughout the school.
  • We use a range of resources such as Numicon to help learn practically.
  • We use the White Rose maths scheme. The scheme of work can be viewed below.

Science

Science

We want our children to love science. We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and grow up wanting to be astronauts, forensic scientists, toxicologists, or microbiologists. We want them to embody our core values. The science curriculum has been carefully crafted to be exciting and challenging and work within the parameters of our class structure and the National Curriculum. We want our children to remember their science lessons in our school, to cherish these memories and embrace the scientific opportunities they are presented with.
