Inclusion

At Leonard Stanley, inclusion means every child belongs, achieves and thrives—regardless of background, need or circumstance. At the heart of our ethos, we:

  • Know each child well—including those with SEND, from disadvantaged backgrounds or in care.
  • Adapt our teaching, curriculum and support to remove barriers and encourage confident participation.
  • Work closely with families, specialists and support services, ensuring timely interventions and regular progress reviews.
  • Promote a culture of belonging, kindness and high expectations, empowering pupils to grow academically and personally.
  • Use evidence-based approaches to narrow gaps and celebrate progress.

How we know it works
We demonstrate inclusion through:

  • Achievements in curricular and extra-curricular activities
  • Positive pupil, staff and parent feedback
  • Measurable outcomes showing all pupils are making strong progress, closing gaps and feeling valued

Following a local authority SEND review (October 2025), our inclusion philosophy was summarised as follows:
"LS...are committed to knowing every child as an individual, identifying barriers and celebrating strengths. Their graduated approach ensures tailored support for all learners, including those with SEND and other vulnerabilities. High-quality teaching, targeted interventions, and strong partnerships with families and external agencies help every child thrive. Staff receive ongoing training, and they foster a culture where every teacher is a teacher of SEND, ensuring no child is missed."

Special Educational Needs & Disability

Leonard Stanley Primary School is committed to providing an appropriate and high quality education for all the children living in our local community. We value all children equally and believe that all children, including those identified as having Special Education Needs (SEN), have a common entitlement to a broad and balanced academic and social curriculum, which is accessible to them, and to be fully included in all aspects of school life.

The school has a talented, committed teaching staff who provide a full, varied and well-structured curriculum. We aim for a stimulating environment where we present our children with a wide range of exciting and challenging experiences to enable them to develop as rounded individuals and to reach their full potential. Education is not just about intellectual development, important though that is. It is also about developing personal, spiritual, social, physical and creative skills.

During ongoing assessment class teachers will identify those pupils who need additional and different provision to that which is normally provided for pupils of the same age. They will arrive at this decision using their own professional judgement, gathering evidence from discussions with parents/carers and staff about how the child is progressing, the pupil’s strengths and areas for concern and advice from previous teachers / schools amongst other things. We also take into account the views of the children and their families, enabling them to participate in decision making and, where necessary, outside agencies will be asked for their professional judgement to support the identification process.

Our aim is for all children, including those with SEND, to reach their full potential in a supportive environment that prepares them well for the future.
