Councils, Teams & Captains
At Leonard Stanley C of E Primary School we promote the active participation by pupils from Y1-Y6, through a School Council, Eco Action Team, Worship & Vision Team and Sports Council. Details of the current year's members can be found below. These positions are voted in by fellow pupils within each class.
The Eco Action Team (Eco-schools)
Leonard Stanley C of E Primary School is currently a Bronze Level Award holder within Eco-Schools and it is our goal to attain the highly regarded level of “Green Flag Award” in sustainability.
Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.
The Eco-Schools programme is focused on ten key topics. These are:
Biodiversity
Energy
Global Citizenship
Healthy Living
Litter
Marine
School Grounds
Transport
Waste
Water
Eco-Schools follow a simple seven-step process which helps them to address a variety of environmental themes, ranging from litter and waste to healthy living and biodiversity.
Pupils are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they form and help lead the Eco-Committee and help to carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of the school. In conjunction with the rest of the school and the wider community, it’s the pupils (from Y2 to Y6) that decide the environmental themes they want to address and how they’re going to do it. They are supported in their efforts by the school’s Science Leader.
School Council
The Leonard Stanley School Council meets termly and is democratically elected in-line with our British Values .
Pupils who wish to stand for election, present to fellow pupils their reasons for wishing to stand and explain what they feel they could contribute to the success of the council. Every child on the council is voted in by their class.
The children are also key ambassadors for the school, and will fulfil such responsibilities as escorting visitors around the premises and helping guests etc.
We want Leonard Stanley Primary School pupils to have a say in what happens in our school and to try to make it a better, safer and more fun place to be. Through the School Council, we hope that our children know that they are listened to and that each individual has an important part to play in our school.
In September, following a simple hustings, each class elects two representatives (usually one boy and one girl) to the School Council. The School Council then meets regularly throughout the year, to discuss ideas about how to make our school an even better place. After School Council meetings, members go back to their classes and discuss ideas from the meeting, and listen to opinions.
The School Council has its own budget, which encourages financial awareness and enterprise skills. The group is currently discussing ideas to make further improvements to playtimes as well as thinking about ways to involve pupils in roles such as peer mediation, librarians and prefects. The School Council members for Y5 and Y6 also run our “Love Where You Learn” programme which focuses on building respect (one of our Christian Values) for their learning environment.
Sports Council
The Sports Council is made up of the 8 elected House Captains – 2 from each house-point (colour) group and 2 voted in PE representatives from each class (Y1-Y5).
The Sports Council meet at least once a term, with Mr B, to discuss any issues in PE/sport, to discuss upcoming events, how we can move PE/sport forward in the school etc. They take news/ideas back to class to discuss further. The Sports Council monitor the equipment in their class’s PE bag, making sure kit is brought back to the class and it’s looked after. Any lost kit is collected by them and returned to the classes.
House Captains (voted in by Y6 pupils) present Head Teachers Awards each week in the Celebration Assembly, and are a driving force behind running lunchtime activities for YR-Y5 during that break. They help with keeping the PE bags stocked and monitor use at breaks.
Worship & Vision Team
As a Church school we encourage our children to play an active role in leading regular collective worship and have our own children's 'Worship & Vision Team' made up of volunteers from Y1 to Y6 who prepare and lead readings, prayers, drama, power-points and set up the hymns to be sung.
The themes; chosen by the children, for the children, relate to our core Christian values. The children prepare all resources for the daily act of Worship including setting and laying the current Ecumenical colour (based on the Church season) on our service table, setting up the Cross, candles and Bible as well as setting up the hymn and projectors.
The children also regularly assist the Headteacher in our 'Celebration Assembly' each Friday afternoon, where the achievements of the week, both in school and outside school, are shared and celebrated. Members from Y5 and Y6 organise the collection of feedback from the other pupils on collective worship. This is then collated by them and fed-back to the Governors’ Ethos Committee who discuss the findings with a view to implementing change if required.
The Worship Team meet once per month with the RE Subject Leader.
These are just a few of the ways in which as a school we develop young leaders and greater spiritual and social understanding through the wider curriculum.
